A’dam

An a'dam is a ter’angreal used to control women who can channel. An a'dam can only be used by a woman who at least can learn to channel the One Power. The common form of an a'dam is a silvery metal collar and bracelet, connecting a sul’dam and a damane. The collar and bracelet are usually connected by a leash, but it is not necessary. The sul’dam wears the bracelet while the damane is collared around the neck. It allows a sul’dam to impose her will upon a damane.

The first a'dam was made by Deain, an Aes Sedai. Luthair Paendrag, while having mostly conquered and controlled Seanchan, still had trouble from Aes Sedai. She brought it to Luthair, hoping to gain his favor. However, after the technique of making a'dam became perfected by those loyal to Luthiar, Deain became a victim of her own invention.

A typical a'dam cannot control men who channel. A man and woman who can both channel, if connected by an a'dam long enough, both suffer an excruciating death. However, the existence of a black a'dam which can control a man is known by a very few people. It requires the use of two sul’dam to work.
