Quote of the Moment
Hope is like a piece of string when you're drowning. It just isn't enough to get you out by itself.

Balthamel

Before turning to the Shadow, Eval Ramman was a historian, unable to distinguish himself enough to earn the coveted third name. He specialized in the study of vanished cultures, but his work was not outstanding. Eval Ramman had a bad temper which almost caused him to be bound with the One Power to prevent him from doing something violent.

He enjoyed consorting with the lower elements of society, and was very popular with the women. Perhaps the only reason he did not lose his job was his great strength with the One Power. The man to be known as Balthamel went to the Shadow for the simple promise of immortality.

Balthamel might have run an intelligence network which competed with that run by Moghedien. One of his most prominent atrocities was setting up camps to breed humans as food for the Trolloc armies which were ravaging the land.

Since his release...

Balthamel was trapped even closer to the seal of the Bore than Aginor. The passage of time was hard on Balthamel; his body was so rotted from his imprisonment that he covered the entire surface of his skin and he no longer possessed the ability to speak for himself.

Balthamel, with Aginor at his side, confronted Rand al'Thor and his party at the Eye of the World. It was at the Eye that Balthamel was killed by the Green Man, the first of the Forsaken to die.

The Forsaken awoke from their imprisonment in an Age where their knowledge and powers made them seemingly invincible. But several of the male Forsaken quickly learned this was not the case, dying in the service of the Great Lord of the Dark. The Lord of the Grave, though, saw fit to resurrect two of these men.

Aran'gar is Balthamel, one of the vanquished male Forsaken risen from the grave. The Lord of the Grave decided to give him, along with Aginor, a second chance in his service.

Like Osan'gar, Aran'gar received the body of a Borderlander. Unlike Osan'gar, though, Aran'gar did not receive the body of an average man. Instead, he received the body of a beautiful woman. Aran'gar still channels saidin, though, proving it is the soul of the channeler which determines which half of the True Source a person taps.

Aran'gar, too, was created as a tool of the Dark One. Her name comes from one of two daggers used in duels during the Age of Legends. Success should mean a great deal to Aran'gar, as the Great Lord has a history of going hard on those who have failed him more than once.

Since her creation...

Aran'gar currently resides with the Aes Sedai marching on Tar Valon, posing under the name Halima. It was Aran'gar who rescued Moghedien from the a'dam which imprisoned her. She has also grown close to Egwene al'Vere, the Amyrlin Seat of the rebel Aes Sedai.
